Located between the Delaware Valley and Raritan Valley, it was originally called "Queenstown" in honor of Queen Anne before evolving to "Pennytown" and later Pennington around 1747, likely named after Edward Penington, a Quaker leader and Surveyor General of Pennsylvania with ties to the area's colonial governance.
